Tape is a physical record, and it fails physically. The magnetic pattern itself is durable; what gives way is the plastic ribbon carrying it, the binder holding the magnetic coating on, and the machine asked to play it. The general practice below is about slowing all three down.
Storage
Cool, dry and stable beats cold or warm and changeable. Heat softens the binder and encourages the layers of a wound tape to print through onto each other; damp encourages the binder to absorb water and go sticky. A cupboard in a heated room is usually better than a loft or a garage, because the swing between summer and winter is smaller there.
Winding and orientation
Store cassettes upright, standing on the long edge like a book, so the weight of the tape pack does not rest on the lower flange of a spool. Store them wound fully to one end rather than stopped in the middle, so the pack is even and the tape sits square. A tape that has sat for years benefits from being wound end to end once before it is played, which evens the pack and relieves the tension it settled into.
Handling
- Keep cassettes in their sleeves; the hinged lid keeps most dust out, and the sleeve keeps the rest off the lid.
- Do not open the lid to touch the tape. Skin oils on the surface transfer straight to the head drum.
- Let a cassette brought in from the cold reach room temperature before playing it, so condensation does not form on the tape.
- Wind a stopped tape fully to one end before putting it away rather than leaving it mid-reel.
- Label the sleeve rather than the shell where possible, and keep adhesive off the lid and the spool windows.
The deck matters as much as the tape
A machine with a dirty head drum, a worn pinch roller or perished belts will damage a tape that was otherwise fine, and a single pass through a bad transport can crease an edge permanently. If a recording matters, it is worth playing it on a machine known to be in order rather than on the first deck to hand. A tape that squeals, sticks or sheds visible powder should be stopped rather than played through; continuing simply distributes the shedding across the transport.
What cannot be undone
Creases, stretched edges and lost coating are permanent. Print-through – a faint ghost of a strong signal transferring between adjacent layers of the wound pack – is reduced by even winding but does not reverse. The realistic goal is not the repair of a damaged tape but keeping an undamaged one in the condition it is already in.
